Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo Leads Effort to Protect Seniors, Veterans, and Families

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo announced the passage of Assembly Joint Resolution 3 (AJR 3) through both chambers of the California Legislature. The resolution, which passed the State Senate on Monday and the Assembly today, urges the federal government to protect funding for Social Security, Medicare, and Medi-Cal from cuts and the federal budget bill HR1 with rollbacks that will devastate millions of California families.

“With this vote, California is sending a loud and clear message: do not give billionaires tax breaks on the backs of seniors, veterans, and families who have paid into and rely on these programs,” said Assemblywoman Schiavo. “Social Security, Medicare, and Medi-Cal are lifelines, and protecting them means protecting people’s health, dignity, and security.”

The resolution is co-authored by Republicans and Democrats alike, receiving strong support from healthcare providers, veterans’ advocates, and community organizations across the state.

“Cuts to Medi-Cal will devastate our ability to serve the most vulnerable in our communities—children, seniors, and working families,” said Christopher Reed, CEO of Northeast Valley Health Corporation. “We thank Assemblywoman Schiavo for championing this fight to ensure Californians continue to have access to the care they need.”

With AJR 3’s passage, a bipartisan coalition of California lawmakers formally call on Congress and the President to reverse course on cuts in HR1/3 to these essential programs. Advocates and legislators vow to continue pressing federal leaders to protect and expand access to healthcare and retirement security for all Americans.
